Christina produces small sculpures out of wax and makes them into bronze
sculptures. By working in wax first she excludes the extra step of making
a mold of an existing sculpture and them making a replica of it in wax.
In order to make one of her sculptors the mold is made around the wax
object and then heated in an oven until all the wax has melted out and
any moisture in the plaster mold has evapourated. Bronze is then melted
in a furnace and poured into the empty space that was once occupied by
the original sculpture. After cooling the sculpture is liberated from
the mold and cleaned and a patina is sometimes added to the surface. Christina
is in the process of building a small bronze foundry in France in order
to try and make the sculptures herself, thus avoiding the huge costs of
having them produced in commercial foundries.
